Configuring Your Router To Avoid WiFi problems

300Mbps WiFi Adapters and Smart WiFi Routers

Recently we have received reports from customers who are experiencing difficulty connecting or establishing reliable connections to their dual band router via our 300Mbps WiFi adapter that ships with many Stormforce Gaming systems.

The WiFi adapter that we ship with a lot our gaming systems is intended to provide a reliable and secure wireless connection where the use of a dedicated network cable is not possible.

Most customers will be unaffected by this if they are using a modern router but customer feedback has highlighted a specific problem with dual band routers that ship directly from certain internet service providers, specifically routers with Smart WiFi features.

There is no problem with your Stormforce Gaming system or your ISP provided networking equipment, but manually reconfiguring your dual band router to broadcast both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequencies separately helps mitigate problems that can arise from having the router broadcasting on both channels simultaneously under one SSID (Wireless Network Name).

Our higher end systems ship with higher performance WiFi adapters. This information may not be applicable to these customers but may still assist in troubleshooting connectivity or connection stability issues.

 

Why This Occurs

Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide a basic router for WiFi coverage that is suitable for most homes. They mostly use similar hardware and are configured in a way that allows devices with different wireless speed capabilities to connect to the WiFi network on the wireless band that is most suitable for that device.

Your router automatically chooses a wireless frequency to broadcast on that can impact wireless network performance. Having a 300Mbps WiFi adapter being automatically assigned to a frequency can cause drop outs and unreliable wireless connections.

5GHz Frequency is usually used to handle faster devices but the coverage of this band is not usually as strong.

2.4GHz Frequency is the best option if your system is in a different room to your router. It will provide larger coverage areas and is impacted by walls and objects far less than 5GHz.

 

How to Identify Your WiFi Band Configuration

The default configuration setting for Smart routers is to assign WiFi devices automatically. Typically you can tell if your router does this by how many WiFi SSIDs the router transmits.

When you search for available networks on any wireless device, your router may show as a single SSID which usually suggests it is broadcasting on both frequencies simultaneously.

The example below shows a Sky Broadband router broadcast pattern next to an aftermarket router from ASUS configured with separated SSID displayed as two separate WiFi networks.
*Note that the 2.4GHz wireless signal from the ASUS router is stronger than the 5GHz signal.

 

How To Split Your Router’s SSID

The guides below show basic steps for separating SSIDs on the most common ISP provided routers with combined wireless bands.
More in depth details on each router model can be found on respective ISP websites and support channels.

If your router is not listed or covered by the guides below, your router documentation will be available on the suppliers websites for more in depth guidance.

*These settings steps may differ depending on the router model supplied by the ISP.
**You may need to reconnect some devices connected to the network after making these changes.

Sky Broadband 
– Go to your router config page by typing 192.168.0.1 into your web browser
– Log in using your login details to access the router, default username and password is admin & sky. new routers have the wifi password as the password
– Select Wireless from the navigation bar and untick the ‘Synchronise 2.4GHz and 5GHz settings’ option.
– Scroll to the bottom of the page and apply the changes.
– When the page reloads select the ‘5GHz wireless settings’ page from the navigation bar
– In the 5GHz section, scroll to the field titled ‘Name (SSID)’ and add something like 5Ghz to the end of the current name
– Scroll to the bottom of the page and apply the changes.
– Connect your gaming system to the old SSID and use the 5GHz band for other devices.

Plusnet Broadband
– Go to your router config page by typing 192.168.1.254 into your web browser
– Click Advanced Settings
– Enter your Hub admin password when prompted (unless you’ve changed it, you’ll find the default password on the settings card)
– Continue to Advanced Settings.
– Click on Wireless.
– Click 5GHz tab.
– Change ‘Sync with 2.4Ghz’ to No.
– Change the name of the ‘Wireless SSID’ – adding 5GHz on the end of the current name.
– Save the changes.

BT Broadband
– Go to your router config page by typing 192.168.1.254 into your web browser
– Click Advanced Settings
– Click on Wireless
– Enter your Hub admin password when prompted (unless you’ve changed it, you’ll find the default password on the settings card)
– Set the “Separate bands” switch to “ON”
– Your new SSID for the 5GHz band will be created by default. But you can call your new network what you wish
– Save the changes

Virgin Media
– Access the settings page by entering the web address shown on the Hub sticker
– Click Advanced settings, then Wireless and then Wireless signal
– Tick the box next to Manual which will enable the drop-down menu and choose a channel. There are different options for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz channel.
– Click Apply changes and then close the browser window to exit the administration interface.

Talk Talk
– Open your browser and type in 192.168.1.1 to go to the router admin page
– Login with your router username and password. You’ll find these on the sticker underneath the removable settings card on back of your Wi-Fi Hub
– On the Dashboard page, select the See Wi-Fi settings button
– Now choose Manage advanced settings
– Select Continue on the pop-up box
– Choose Wi-Fi configuration
– Type different network names into the Wi-Fi Name text boxes
– To finish, select the Save button
