Stormforce Gaming – 2023 Gaming PC Performance & Buying Guide

Stormforce Gaming have compiled a list of the most popular PC games and carried out extensive testing to ensure we are suggesting the best price point and product for every gamer!

We regularly get asked for advice on what to buy, what to upgrade and what to expect from a new gaming system. To help gamers get an idea of what to expect from each price point, we have tested all of the most popular PC games to gather information on settings that are achievable on each of our systems.

The price point of every computer we sell will determine the performance of the hardware in that system. Obviously, the more expensive systems in our range are capable of higher performance figures and able to play more demanding games.

Simply select the price range you are looking to shop at and that column will give you an indication of the graphics settings you will be able to comfortably play each title at.

We have also provided some tips on what to look for when shopping for a new gaming PC below the table of suggestions.

Choose your Resolution

Picking a monitor resolution is one of the biggest factors into what gaming system you will need. Trying to run a lower spec system on a 4k monitor or a 4k TV would result in very poor performance as the system would not be able to output enough frames per second to provide a smooth visual experience. Likewise it can be a waste to use a very powerful system on a smaller resolution. Whilst a powerful system would always be able to play on a low resolution monitor, that extra performance would be wasted.

It’s all about finding a good balance and picking your in game settings appropriately to get good framerates as well as nice visual quality.

The table below includes systems at different price ranges that Stormforce Gaming sell. We have suggested a monitor resolution that matches that price point too.

When buying a new PC, it is best to buy a computer that is a good match for the monitor you plan to play on. Most smaller monitors are 1080p resolution or HD. These monitors are generally quite easy for most gaming PCs to power games on.

For higher resolution monitors like 1440p, Ultrawide or 4K, a much more powerful system is usually required.

We have paired monitors with systems at different price points and suggested the best in game settings you can use to achieve a smooth, playable frame rate in that game. The more demanding games will of course require a much higher specification PC to run smoothly but each of these suggestions should provide 60+ frames per second or better.

Frames Per Second, Hertz, Refresh Rate, What’s the difference?

We hear this a lot and we agree, it can be confusing. There is a lot that goes into this topic but let’s keep things simple.

  • Frames Per Second or FPS is the output measurement for a Gaming PC. This refers to the amount of frames a PC can output every second. The higher the better.
  • Hertz refers to the refresh rate of your monitor or screen. Having a higher refresh rate generally allows your screen to display more frames per second and match your PC’s graphics output.
  • VRR and Sync Technologies like NVIDIA G-Sync or AMD FreeSync are features present on some monitors and TVs that allow the screen to adapt the refresh rate (Variable Refresh Rate) to match the graphics output resulting in a smoother visual experience.

PC Gamers aim for a minimum FPS of 60. This is widely regarded as the baseline for smooth gameplay. Any lower and you will notice a stuttering feeling when trying to play a game and it wont feel smooth. Some lower paced games like Flight Simulator feel ok if you play at a lower frame rate but for most games, more FPS is best. If you are struggling to hit 60FPS in a game, it is a good idea to lower your graphics settings slightly so you can find a good balance between visual quality and performance.

Generally it is good practice to get a screen with a refresh rate to match your graphics output. Even if you have a high refresh rate monitor with 120Hz or 144Hz (or even higher), you will still benefit from this high refresh rate even if you arent matching the Hertz with your FPS.

Remember – running at high FPS doesn’t matter if your monitor cant support it. If your Gaming PC is able to output 120FPS in most games, running that system on a 60Hz monitor will limit what you can see anyway or even cause something called screen tearing, this is something that happens when your monitor tries and fails to keep up with your graphics card.

If you press ‘Windows key’ + S to Open search and type ‘Advanced Display Settings’, you will get display information from your graphics and monitor. Be sure to set your refresh rate to the highest that you display will support.

Upscaling your Experience

In recent years, graphics card technology has put in place upscaling features that allow your system to play more demanding games.
Think of this as the graphics card taking each frame it outputs and upscaling the image to a higher resolution.

We have included a suggestion to use DLSS on the table below where it is available.

DLSS stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling, is NVIDIA’s award-winning AI rendering technology that increases graphics performance in over 280 games and apps using dedicated Tensor Core AI processors on GeForce RTX GPUs. Enabling DLSS in games that support it will drastically improve the performance of the game and allow you to enable many visual features whilst maintaining high frame rates in that game.

For the full list of DLSS supported games, please look HERE to check if your game is supported.

If your system has an AMD Radeon Graphics card, you can enable FidelityFX™ Super Resolution (or FSR), this cutting edge upscaling technology will help to boost framerates in selected titles and deliver high quality gaming experiences for gamers using AMD Radeon graphics.
