Stormforce Gaming Sim Racing Systems

Simulation computer systems and peripherals are a great training tool for drivers wanting to race at home…

Racing Simulators have been a staple in any PC Gaming library for years. Advances in high performance desktop gaming systems have allowed Sim developers to create realistic simulations that move away from being ‘just a game’ and into the realm of experiencing realistic physics and force feedback in any type of car imaginable.

In 2020, the popularity of racing simulators exploded with real drivers needing practice and seat time and gamers wanting to expand the capabilities of their gaming setups with a steering wheel and pedal set.

Real world racing teams are even adopting Sim Racing as a proving ground for recruiting talented virtual drivers into their real world racing programs.

The popularity of professional drivers turning to esports events to showcase their driving talent has helped to grow awareness of Sim Racing in the gaming community. In addition to this, motorsports and driving fans have now realised that the thrill of driving any car from the comfort of their homes is a realistic and affordable proposition after seeing F1 stars like Lando Norris and Max Verstappen driving online against eachother.

This popularity and momentum has continued for the last couple of years with Sim racing becoming more popular than ever.

Sim Racing Covers All Bases

From Rally and Offroad to Karting, Formula and GT racing, there is a Sim Racing title to suit every taste.

Serious drivers looking to utilise the realism of simulation titles to practice their track knowledge and gain valuable seat time have flocked to Sim Racing to keep their skills sharp when real life driving isn’t possible.

In addition, gamers have taken to Sim Racing as an affordable alternative to real life racing as it offers much of the same experience without the cost of fuel, tyres, track time and repair bills! A properly set up simulator is a valuable driver training tool and lets you get seat time and extra practice at a much lower cost than track days and race car maintenance.

Many of the most popular simulators on the market today are often heavily discounted or available in discount bundles. Keep an eye on your favourite game service & store for deals on these titles.

Assetto Corsa is the go to simulation software for all types of car enthusiast. With a comprehensive list of vehicles in the base title as well as never ending mod support, Assetto Corsa provides an all encompassing platform for Sim Racers to experience any type of driving they wish. Drifting, Rallying, Road Car racing and track days are all catered for by this vast Sim Racing staple that is less demanding on modern hardware and will run well on most gaming systems.
Most Stormforce Gaming systems will play Assetto Corsa fairly well. A higher end system can also take advantage of the custom shader pack which is a mod for the game that enhances the visuals far in excess of how the game launched. Assetto Corsa is the ideal simulator for virtual reality users also with full VR support and a wealth of mods available that enhance a VR experience.

Dirt Rally is a series of rally simulation titles from Codemasters and is seen as the ultimate off road simulator title. You will need quick reflexes and nerves of steel to blast a wide range of legendary Rally machinery around treacherous stages or test your wits in head to head Rally Cross events. Dirt Rally games give you the opportunity to take part in daily, weekly and mothly time trial challenges with worldwide leader boards to compare your abilities against other drivers. Dirt Rally runs really well on even entry level hardware and doesn’t need a mammoth system to get strong visuals.
Rally fans will love the detailed force feedback even on lower cost steering wheels and the constant evolving weekly challenges provide a new project every week!

Automobilista 2 (AMS2) provides a real showcase with lifelike physics, handling, visuals and weather elements. Powered by the stunning Madness Engine, AMS2 has a huge range of historic and modern circuits, some of which you wont find on any other Sim Racing title. Formula One (F1) Whilst closer to a game than a full blown simulation, the F1 games from Codemasters still provide an enjoyable and challenging ‘sim like’ experience that is about making Formula One driving accessible. Every game is fully licensed each year to provide the latest tracks and liveries as well as having some interesting career features you typically don’t see in more hardcore simulation titles. F1 has full wheel support and really responsive force feedback that allows Sim drivers to get a lot out of the game. In addition, F1 runs really well on most modern hardware.

iRacing is a subscription based racing simulator with all races hosted on official servers. The title simulates real world cars and tracks with great levels of detail and accuracy. Many serious Sim Racing veterans hold the opinion that iRacing is the pinnacle of online racing due to the enforced code of conduct and rules modelled on real world events. iRacing is a more advanced option for people who have tried out other simulators before. Whilst it is entirely possible to play iRacing with no other Sim experience, it is a service that can be costly to participate in as each car and track is costed separately. If you are serious about racing and want to take the next step into competitive racing then iRacing is definitely worth a try.

Project Cars 1&2 offer a user friendly and visually impressive introduction into Sim Racing. These titles are ageing a little now so don’t need a high performance system to run well either.
Project Cars recently released a 3rd game in their series which saw the title take a more arcade approach to their game and moved away from realism in favour of making Project Cars more accessible. These games are worth a try if you have never tried a simulator before and Project Cars 3 is worth checking out if you are looking for a more casual racing game.

rFactor2, Raceroom, KartKraft are all recommended driving simulators with a host of unique features to offer Sim Racers who are looking for more racing action outside of the usual titles.
All of these games run really well on modern hardware and have excellent compatibility with racing wheels.

Content Creator Focus – VR Flight Sim Guy

Stormforce Gaming systems power content creation and demanding VR simulations…

Creating rich and involving content is no easy task, especially when the simulation software you focus on in your content is extremely demanding. Running any demanding game or simulation can be really taxing on your computer and usually requires extremely high performance hardware to achieve smooth frame rates whilst capturing and encoding gameplay footage.

We covered the spectacular Microsoft Flight Simulator in a previous article HERE and in the meantime, World Updates have been added to the title which enhance the fidelity and immersion of landmarks and locations by adding even more detail to environments with airports and points of interest being expertly modelled with stunning levels of accuracy.

At the end of December 2020, Asobo Studio added the highly anticipated Virtual Reality update to Flight Simulator providing the ultimate experience for sim enthusiasts who wanted to experience next level immersion and the feeling of being there.

This Virtual Reality update has allowed members of the Flight Simulator community to produce incredible content showcasing the feeling of real flight without compromise.

Stormforce Gaming recently received a Trustpilot review for one of our flagship systems from a customer who needed a system to power demanding titles on his HP Reverb G2 and Oculus Virtual Reality Headsets and 4K monitor. After checking out his Youtube channel, we just had to share some of this amazing content with the Stormforce Community!

The VR Flight Sim Guy Youtube channel provides a deep dive into the performance aspects in a variety of Virtual Reality flight simulations as well as interesting explorations, reviews and live streams. For Sim enthusiasts, the channel offers a raft of content on making the most out of your simulator experience and tuning your settings for smooth framerates.

Check out the latest videos from VR Flight Sim Guy on Youtube HERE and consider subscribing to his channel

We spoke to VR Flight Sim Guy to find out more about his passion and what made him choose Stormforce Gaming to power his VR experience and content creation workloads.

“I’ve always had a passion for VR as it gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in an environment that would otherwise be inaccessible in real life. This combined with my interest in flying (both in the real world and using flight simulators), has completely transformed the experience into something tangible and authentic.

The only issue has been finding the right hardware to power such dreams and since owning my previous PC (an i5 8600k, 1080ti), I needed something to power me into the future.

Using high fidelity flight simulators combined with the highest resolution VR headsets can be extremely demanding, but thankfully I found the right PC up to the task.

I can now run all my sims and games on ultra and experience the immersion I’ve always wanted. It’s absolutely amazing.”

It is incredible to see what the Stormforce Gaming community use their systems for and we love hearing from content creators about how our systems help them to improve their work.

A huge thank you to VR Flight Sim Guy for giving us permission to share his awesome content and for choosing Stormforce Gaming for his simulator requirements!

If you are a content creator with a Stormforce Gaming system, please get in touch! We love hearing from our community members on how you use your system and you could be in an upcoming feature too!

Star Wars Squadrons – Overview and System Recommendations

Star Wars Squadrons brings the thrill of blockbuster movie space combat to your Stormforce Gaming PC…

Released at the start of October 2020, Star Wars Squadrons propels gamers into the legendary space combat between the Galactic Empire and the New Republic.

Squadrons boasts an immersive story mode set after the events of Return of the Jedi and features a plethora of references that will appeal to even the most casual Star Wars fans. You take the seat of pilots in Imperial Titan Squadron and the Alliance Vanguard Squadrons as you learn the basics of space flight, starfighter control systems and the careful balance between engines, shields and weapons systems. After a short time and some practice, you will be able to ‘boost drift’ past enemy starfighters, perform wild manoeuvres and minimise hull damage whilst locking onto your next target.

The story mode will introduce you to the basic controls and systems for each of the four starfighter classes on both sides.

Fighter Class ships are represented by the TIE Fighter and X-Wing which are well balanced and versatile for any situation.
Interceptor Class Starfighters like the A-Wing and TIE Interceptor are speedy ships with less armour but much faster engine systems.
Bomber Class ships include the TIE Bomber and Y-Wing and are perfect for dealing huge damage to enemy flagships and critical objectives.
Support Class vessels like the TIE Reaper and U-Wing play a disruptive role and help your squadron stay in the fight longer.

You can also take your newly mastered skills online into Dogfight mode where up to 10 players can battle it out for supremacy in a variety of space combat arenas, each with their own unique appearance, there is also plenty of terrain and debris to block enemy fighters line of sight and avoid crashing into!

Fleet Battles is the main online mode with the objective of taking down the enemy Capital Ship. There is no other game available right now that provides the feeling of taking down an Imperial Star Destroyer quite as well as Squadrons.

Playing Online Multiplayer earns you Glory points which gives you the options to apply cosmetic upgrades to your ship and cockpit. Choose from different hull paint jobs, decals, holograms and even Ewok bobbleheads!

Every starfighter has a host of loadout options allowing you to customise weapon slots, repair droids and hull armour so you can maximise your time on the attack.

Great for Controller, Keyboard and Mouse and Flight Stick

Every player is catered for in Squadrons. The game has responsive keyboard and mouse controls that most PC gamers will be familiar with from the off. Using your mouse to aim and acquire targets feels natural and responsive.
Using the Microsoft XBOX Controller with PC, you can use the built in control scheme to pilot your ship with devastating efficiency. Your controller is fully remappable meaning you can tweak your input configuration to find the best balance for this fast paced game.
The ultimate way to play squadrons is with a HOTAS control setup (short for Hands on Throttle and Stick). This will include a separate joystick and throttle input that give you precise control over your starfighter.

Virtual Reality is incredible in Star Wars Squadrons

Squadrons is built from the ground up for VR support and creates an authentic and immersive experience that puts you right in the cockpit. VR support is integrated into the game and can be launched easily with minimal time spent configuring the game for good VR performance. All major VR headsets like the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index and HP Reverb are supported and will provide real wow factor when playing the game. If you are in the fortunate position to own a HOTAS controller and a VR headset, you are in for a wild ride the first time you jump to lightspeed!
A powerful gaming system is suggested for the best results in Virtual Reality but a mid range system will play Squadrons in VR with the graphics settings adjusted to ensure smooth frame rates.

System Performance Suggestions

Squadrons performance scales very well across a wide variety of PC hardware and is very well optimised to present you with a smooth gaming experience at every monitor resolution.

  • At 1080p, entry level graphics cards like the AMD RX580 and NVIDIA GTX 1650 provide a very playable experience on maximum graphics settings.
  • Higher resolutions like 1440p can be achieved with higher tier cards like NVIDIA GTX 1660 Super or RTX 2060.
  • 4k and ultrawide monitor users can enjoy max settings gameplay, achievable with an RTX 2070 Super graphics card or higher.
  • VR users will benefit from the graphics performance of a higher end video card like an RTX 2060 Super or higher.

Stormforce Gaming have compiled a list of Star Wars Squadrons ready systems that will provide the performance you need to get into this exciting title. The newcomer friendly barrier of entry is extremely low, allowing casual fans to access the world of Star Wars space combat. There is a high skill ceiling and steep learning curve for players who want to learn to master ship commands, systems balancing and gain expert control of their starfighter in online multiplayer battles.
