A Generational Upgrade

Comparing the current lineup of hardware offerings in PC gaming right now can be confusing…

If you have used any gaming system built in the last couple of years, it is safe to say that the performance on offer will be impressive. Modern PC hardware at every price point offers impressive value for money. From lower price point systems featuring entry level hardware up to extreme class systems designed for ultimate gaming performance, there is a consistent performance output at every budget.

With AMD and Intel both offering a plethora of system configurations and options, the decision on what hardware to select can become quite daunting. It becomes even more difficult to advise new PC Gamers on what hardware to select when the offerings available are split over multiple generations.

In January 2023 there are currently four different processor generations from Intel and three different processor generations from AMD that are active and available. This means that every price point has something available for everyone, but as a customer it can be difficult to decide what product suits your needs the best.

At Stormforce Gaming we are slowly moving away from some of the older products as they begin to be phased out. We believe that it is really important to offer a good selection but older hardware becomes less desirable over time.

Our recent range refreshes have seen the introduction of Intel 13th Generation processors as well as the AMD Ryzen 7000 processors. These new platforms bring cutting edge computing performance to our range, but the fact is that they cost more money than the older products.

Latest Platforms

Intel 13th Generation processors work with all of the latest LGA1700 motherboards featuring the H610, B660, Z690, B760 and Z790 chipsets. This means that the latest intel products have access to a flexible platform that can use the latest hardware as well as older standards of memory and storage. Every current Intel chipset motherboard in the Stormforce Gaming range features strong connectivity.

AMD Ryzen 7000 is a little more specialist but does offer bleeding edge technology. The new AM5 socket from AMD is found on some of the most advanced motherboards on the market today. With a host of ultra performance X670, X670E, B650E and B650 motherboards featuring support for Ryzen 7000 processors, there is a plethora of options for power users, gamers and content creators looking for a multitasking powerhouse.

Last Generation

Intel 12th Generation and AMD AM4 processors are all still really good choices. The hardware in the market right now that is a year or two old is still really good value for money and will run any modern game or application. Products like the Intel i5 12400F still represent amazing value for money in gaming performance for the average gamer who wants a good value system to play a wide variety of games. Meanwhile any of the AMD 5000 series processors are still a fantastic choice for gamers and content creators who want strong multicore performance at a reasonable price point. System featuring the Ryzen 9 5950X are great options for power users who want the best of gaming and workflow performance without breaking the bank. Meanwhile, the more affordable 5600X Ryzen 5 is still a gaming powerhouse that covers all bases without the extra cost of DDR5 memory and other brand new components being mandatory inclusions in the build.

The high performance options from the latest hardware generations can take advantage of DDR5 memory, as well as high performance NVME storage solutions. Typically these bleeding edge products are higher cost which raises the value of the system significantly. They do add performance but where this is most noticeable is usually in intensive computing tasks like rendering, video editing and other professional application workflows. If you have specific applications that you use for work or creative purposes then it may be worth looking at these options a little closer to maximise your all round computing experience.

The typical gamer may not notice a tangible performance benefit by going for the latest and greatest but there is still a strong argument to go for the best you can afford. In many cases, a high performance graphics card will usually produce much higher results when paired with a high performance CPU. Getting the balance correct is really important.

What does the performance difference look like?

Our expert technical team have put together some CPU testing and game benchmarks to showcase how the leap from last generation to current generation hardware will look like for application performance, gaming and your wallet!

Rendering comparisons between the top two flagship products from AMD and Intel below show a significant difference between the two generations of processors in a rendering task.
We use Cinebench R23 to do a quick comparison that outlines the difference you are likely to see in computational performance for single threaded and multi threaded workloads.

Cinebench is an industry standard benchmark application that shows a score based on the performance of a processor when rendering a scene using a single CPU core or all of them together.

You can see that there is a mild increase in performance between generations for both AMD and Intel processors on single core renders. However, we are testing high performance i7 and Ryzen 9 processors here so the real test is the multi core scores. The uplift between generations for the i7 models from Intel show a nice boost of 33% and the AMD Ryzen 9 comparison shows a staggering 49% increase.

These numbers really showcase that going up to the latest generation of hardware offers real benefits if you need them.

Gaming comparisons are where uplifts like this are a little more difficult to pinpoint. Information about average framerates are more relevant to gamers who only care about performance info.

For our gaming comparisons we tested two processors using the exact same platform for all tests. We avoided using AMD as their new platform uses a different motherboard and memory type.

We did three benchmark runs on each configuration and took the average framerate on each run, then took an average of all three runs to get our results.

Using the same platform across all of our games tests gives us a nice baseline that only shows the difference between processor performance and how this helps to boost the graphics card too.

We also used a 360mm Corsair Capellix H150 liquid cooler to remove any chance that the processors could throttle down performance due to thermal limitations of the cooler.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is a classic PC gaming title for benchmarking a wide range of hardware. at 1080p we are not testing the capabilities of the video card and are instead focussing on the differences between CPU generation. The 12th Generation i7 CPU throws up a score of 168FPS compared to the 200FPS produced by the 13700K. This shows a 19% performance uplift which is significant. On an older title like this, the difference will be much wider at a lower resolution. Typically the video card in this test should be used at much higher resolutions than 1080p where the performance delta would reduce. By testing this way, it helps identify bottlenecks in the system configuration and show how things perform in more CPU limited situations.

 

Moving onto the recently released Guardians of the Galaxy. The increase from 117FPS on the i7 12700K up to 147FPS on the 13700K shows just under 26% improvement in framerate performance by going with the faster CPU. This game is quite demanding at higher resolutions and from our testing, does like processors with lots of cores and fast frequencies.

 

Cyberpunk 2077 is this generations ‘system killer’ title that needs high power hardware to even begin approaching high framerates. The two CPUs both performed admirably on our Cyberpunk testing with a respectable 80.54FPS coming from the i7 12700K and 95.87FPS generated by the 13700K. An uplift of 19% improvement on the newer chip.

In summary, if you are looking to buy a new computer, the best option you have available to you is the latest hardware. The latest generation of Intel and AMD processors will provide you with staggering performance at every price point and give you plenty of power for the latest games and applications. With every latest gen CPU offering major multicore performance improvements at every pricepoint over their older predecessors, you will be making a solid decision by going for the current gear.

With that being said, those bar charts above this paragraph show big gaps. The reality is that whilst there is a performance difference in games, the lower result still shows perfectly fine gaming performance. The older CPU generations are still no slouch in multitasking and ultimately are providing you with another option at a lower price point.

You cannot go wrong with any of the current range of modern processors or hardware platforms on the market right now. You can certainly save some money in areas that don’t matter to you, but the tradeoff for going for older product models does mean that you can usually take advantage of a lower price point for similar performance.

Redesigned Processor Architecture

Intel’s latest generation of processors has seen the debut of a new and improved desktop core architecture called Cypress Cove, which will replace their long-established Ice Lake 10nm architecture. AVX512 Instructions

NVIDIA have announced additional titles being added to the RT & DLSS lineup…

We recently posted a guide to optimising your system for the best performance in the demanding Cyberpunk 2077 to help Stormforce Gaming customers extract the maximum frames per second out of their systems. As games become more graphically demanding and monitor resolutions and frequencies improve, the load put on your graphics card is likely to increase.

DLSS (or Deep Learning Super Sampling) from NVIDIA is an AI accelerated image enhancement tool that works with all RTX video cards. For gamers with high resolution monitors, DLSS can be the difference between a playable and unplayable gaming experience.

Games with DLSS capabilities will render at a lower resolution and upscale the game to your target resolution whilst AI helps to sharpen the upscaled image with very little loss to visual fidelity and huge gains in performance.

In addition to this, recent titles like The Witcher III and Doom Eternal will also be updated to include Ray Tracing support and provide significant visual improvements to existing titles already in your library.

AMD Ryzen 5000 ‘Zen 3’ Desktop Processors

In 2017, AMD released the first generation of Ryzen CPUs. These processors offered fantastic efficiency by offering modern multicore performance, high clock speeds and surprising energy efficiency.

The second generation of Ryzen CPUs from 2018 pushed the boundaries further with significant improvements in enthusiast and gamer orientated features.

In 2019, the speed, efficiency and optimisation continued with the launch of Ryzen 3000. Bringing wide socket compatibility and the introduction of PCIe Generation 4 connectivity.

AMD has taken huge leaps in efficiency and performance with every iteration of Ryzen since the initial release.

Things are about to change yet again with the launch of the new AMD Ryzen 5000 Range.

Push the Performance Envelope

Over the last few years, AMD have been working tirelessly to produce compelling desktop processors for gamers and creators. Each Ryzen line released in the past three years has improved and refined expectations in the desktop processor market. With significant wins in all areas of computing, AMD processors have been revolutionising performance in desktop, laptop, enterprise and console computing applications. Both the new Microsoft XBOX Series X and Sony Playstation 5 feature 7nm processor architecture from AMD.

AMD’s recent rise in popularity in the PC Gaming space can be widely attributed to the Zen CPU microarchitecture. Ryzen 3000 processors provided gamers with a multitude of refinements with more cores and more performance available whilst increased core counts improved multitasking performance for content creators on mainstream desktop platforms.

AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors increase performance further with higher maximum boost speed, new core layout and a significant improvement in IPC (Instructions Per Clock) that will all directly benefit gamers and content creators who need fast, multicore processing solutions to get the very best from their systems.

 

What The New Changes Bring for You

Zen 2 vs Zen 3 CPU Layout

The improvements in speed are easier to understand when you view the architecture diagrams comparing the new CPUs to the previous generation.

On Zen 2 (Ryzen 3000) processors, the Level 3 Cache was split in a way that it could be shared with each CCX (Core Complex).
With Zen 3 (Ryzen 5000) processors, the cores are combined into a single, unified CCD (Core Chiplet Die). The Level 3 Cache is combined and accessible to all of the cores.

Simply put, the amount of cache remains the same but the way each core accesses the cache is drastically improved by essentially doubling the pool of cache accessible to each core.

This approach will reduce latency across the entire processor and reduce the amount of communication paths the CPU has to make. This translates into a significant boost in Instructions Per Clock performance which is vital for achieving higher framerates in games.

Frequencies on the new processors are a little higher than the previous generation but the 5000 series efficiency improvements will translate to better raw performance in games as well as single and multi core optimised applications. Video rendering, game streaming, 3D modelling and other CPU hungry applications will all be able to take advantage of this new architecture.

AMD claims large gaming improvement across the board vs the old generation of Ryzen processors, especially in lower resolutions where gaming performance can be more CPU limited.

The New AMD Ryzen 5000 Series Processors

The new CPU models available from AMD will operate on AMD X570 and B550 chipset motherboards.

All of the new CPUs have 24 PCIe lanes, support DDR4 3200 memory speeds and are packaged for the AM4 CPU Socket.

When paired with an X570 motherboard, users can benefit from up to 40 PCIe lanes of connectivity, all at PCI Express Gen4 speeds.
Should you choose a more affordable B550 model, you can enjoy up to 20 PCIe Gen4 lanes.

This CPU is being pitched as the ultimate gamers CPU. 6 high frequency cores provide ample thread count for multi threaded applications and games and provides gaming performance similar to processors much higher in the range.

Ryzen 7 5800X – 8 Cores, 16 Threads – 105W TDP – 32mb L3 Cache – 3.8GHz Base Clock – 4.7GHz Boost Clock
The octa-core Zen 3 processor is one of the fastest gaming chips in the Ryzen 5000 line-up. Providing strong performance increases in multithreaded applications, this CPU is ideal for gamers with high refresh rate monitors looking for high FPS figures in their games.

Real World Weather – Real World Air Traffic

Flight Simulator allows you complete control of the time and weather of your flight. You can decide to fly at any time of day and make adjustments to the time, date and weather circumstances whist in the air. This allows you to take in incredible sunrises or put yourself in the middle of a storm to test your flight skills. By default, the weather circumstances use realtime weather data so wherever you are flying in the world, the time of day and weather scenario will be presented as it is in that location. Many Flight Simulator users have been using this revolutionary feature to explore weather events like hurricanes and storms all over the planet.

In addition to complete control of the weather and time, Flight Simulator uses data from real life aircraft to populate airports and the skies with real life aircraft. If you see another plane cruising by on your flight, that plane will be on its flight path in real life too. There isn’t another simulator available with this level of detail and immersion.

Constant development on the title means that the world and presentation of Flight Simulator is always progressing. The developers have announced that Virtual Reality support is coming soon. Putting you in the cockpit of your favourite aircraft so that you can fly around landmarks and points of interest with ease.

System Suggestions & Resolutions

All of the ground breaking features that Flight Simulator offers means that in order to run the game at Ultra Settings, you will need a hefty Gaming System. Stormforce Gaming has a wide range of systems that will offer a Flight Simulator experience for most budgets. The simulator has been labelled as one of the most demanding PC Gaming titles in recent memory so your experience will vary depending on your resolution and the Stormforce Gaming system you use.

The game has a very scalable graphics engine and will work well on lower end hardware but you will be forced to drop your video quality settings to maintain smooth frame rates.

One thing to keep in mind is that Microsoft Flight Simulator is a fairly slow paced game. Usually we suggest that gamers aim for a system that will run a title at 60 frames per second or higher but after many hours of testing, we have found that 35 frames per second or higher in this title offers a very playable and smooth experience. If you can achieve higher than 35FPS on your system then your experience of the simulator will be even better.

  • At 1080p, an RTX 2060 Super would be a baseline for Ultra settings. Lower tier video cards will still run the game but you will need to scale back graphics settings for a smooth experience.
  • Higher resolutions like 1440p can be achieved with higher tier cards like NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super or the new NVIDIA RTX 3070 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 for a smooth experience on Ultra settings.
  • 4k and ultrawide monitor users will require a card like the NVIDIA RTX 2080 Super. The new NVIDIA RTX 3080 or AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT would be the best option for the highest settings at large resolutions.

We recommend a system with at least an AMD Ryzen 5 or Intel i5 processor, 16GB of system memory and an SSD for optimal performance in this title too.

How to get started with your Stormforce Gaming PC & Microsoft XBOX Game Pass for PC

As Microsoft partners, Stormforce Gaming provides a one month free trial of Game Pass with qualifying systems providing you with instant access to a huge library of top tier games to get up and running with as soon as your system arrives.

When you first switch on your new Stormforce Gaming PC and hit the desktop, your system will alert you that there are items that come with your device.

  • Click ‘Get it now’ or search in the taskbar for ‘Windows Store’.
  • On the Home tab of the Windows Store you will be presented with Game Pass for PC.
  • Click ‘Get’ and sign in using your Microsoft account details or create a new account.
  • The wizard will then allow you to subscribe and choose a payment method for future months after your trial period.
  • Once completed, you can go to the XBOX Game Pass for PC app and start browsing for titles to play!

On the main XBOX Game Pass for PC app you can browse titles by Recently Added, Most Popular or have the app randomly suggest your next adventure.
